Election authorities step up measures to check illegal sale, storage of Liquor in J&K

POONCH, SEPTEMBER 08: In a decisive move to prevent the misuse of alcohol in the upcoming Assembly elections, the Election authorities have launched an intensive inspection drive across Poonch district, focusing on surprise inspections and stringent vigilance to combat the illegal distribution of alcohol.

Bharat Ramchandra Andhale, the Election Expenditure Observer for the Poonch Haveli constituency, spearheaded the effort by conducting a series of surprise visits to wine shops and storage facilities in Poonch town to discourage illegal storage and supply of liquor.

This initiative aimed to address the growing concern about alcohol being used as an incentive to sway voters.

Andhale's surprise inspections targeted various wine shops within the Haveli Assembly constituency to verify stock levels and ensure no excess inventory was being stocked for illicit purposes.

His visits sent a strong message that the ECI is taking a zero-tolerance stance on alcohol misuse during elections. In addition to these inspections, Andhale issued strict instructions to law enforcement agencies to maintain a close vigil on all routes, vehicles, and storage facilities to prevent the illegal transportation of liquor and other illicit substances, such as drugs.

The Election Expenditure Observer’s directive emphasises the importance of close monitoring and ensuring that any suspicious activity is promptly investigated to prevent any illegal distribution that could influence the electoral process.

We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that elections are conducted in a free and fair manner,” said Bharat Ramchandra Andhale.

He said, “Our directive to the excise department and law enforcement is clear: monitor every aspect of alcohol distribution, from storage to transportation, to prevent any illegal activity.”

The Excise Department has also been tasked with conducting bi-weekly inspections of all wine shops to prevent the increase of excess inventory that could potentially be used for illegal distribution.

Law enforcement agencies are now intensifying vehicle checks within the constituencies, particularly focusing on routes known for smuggling, to ensure that no unlawful transportation of alcohol or drugs occurs.
