RAJOURI: The Rajouri Assembly constituency, long known as a NC- Congress bastion , recently witnessed one of the most closely contested elections in its history of Jammu and Kashmir.
The race saw Iftikar Ahmed of the Indian National Congress (INC) narrowly defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Vibodh Gupta by a mere 1,400 votes.
The results of the contest are particularly striking when examining the vote share. Iftikar Ahmed secured 45% of the total votes, while Vibodh Gupta was right behind him with 43%, whereas there was formal alliance with National Conference and Congress.
The alliances helped consolidate anti-BJP sentiments and provided Iftikar Ahmed with a critical advantage and eventually turned out as Winner.
On the other hand, Vibodh Gupta ability to run a competitive race speaks volumes about the BJP's growing presence in Rajouri Constituency and ability to secure 27,519 votes is a testament to historic contest and tale of a changing political narrative in Rajouri and Jammu and Kashmir.
