CBI arrests Chief Engineer & Executive Engineer red handed while accepting bribe of 2 Lakh in Puducherry

Puducherry , April 06: Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested three accused including Chief Engineer and Executive Engineer of Public Works Department, Government of Puducherry and a private contractor with PWD, immediately after exchanging the partial bribe amount of Rs. two lakh.

An amount of Rs 73 lakh cash was recovered during searches.

A case was registered by CBI on 22.03.2025 against aforesaid accused and unknown other on the allegations that accused Executive Engineer, under whose jurisdiction, accused contractor had undertaken a road contract works in Public Works Department, Karaikal, demanded a bribe of Rs. six lakh, i.e. 1% commission(approx) of the total estimated tender amount of Rs.7,44,59,009/- for accused Chief Engineer, in order to get the future site clearance/payment approval from PWD without causing any delay.

CBI laid a trap and caught three accused immediately after, accused Executive Engineer accepted the partial bribe of Rs. two lakh from the said contractor, in the presence of accused Chief Engineer.

An amount of Rs.Two lakh was recovered from the possession of Executive Engineer. Further, an amount of Rs.50,000/- was also recovered from the vehicle of accused PWD Contractor - Private person.

All the three accused were arrested. Searches were conducted by CBI at residential and official premises of the accused at Puducherry and Karaikal which led to recovery of Rs 73 lakh( Rs 65 lakh cash from the residence of accused Chief Engineer and Rs 8 lakh cash from residence of accused Executive Engineer), some incriminating documents, etc.

The arrested accused were produced before Judicial Magistrate I Karaikal on 23/3/2025 and were sent to Judicial custody.

Investigation is continuing.
