SRINAGAR, Dec 21: The Ministry of Education has revealed that complaints have been received against ten private universities for allegedly selling fabricated PhD degrees.
The complaints, submitted through the Central Vigilance Commission, have prompted investigations into the operations of these institutions.
The universities named in the allegations include OPJS University; University of Technology; Madhav University; Raffles University; Singhania University (Rajasthan); Shri Venkateshwara University, Mangalayatan University (Uttar Pradesh); Sri Satya Sai University of Technology & Medical Sciences, Madhya Pradesh; Sai Nath University, and Jharkhand; Quantum University, Uttarakhand.
The University Grants Commission has forwarded the complaints to the respective state governments for investigation. Following the enquiries, the state governments of Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh cleared Quantum University and Sri Satya Sai University of the allegations, while the state government of Rajasthan took more severe action.
Rajasthan has debarred OPJS University from admissions for the academic year 2024-25 and prohibited the university from enrolling PhD scholars from December 2023.
In response to the growing concern, the UGC has formed a Standing Committee to ensure that universities comply with the prescribed procedures for awarding PhD degrees, in accordance with UGC regulations.
The commission has stated that it will continue to take appropriate actions based on further complaints.
