Srinagar city receives "Award of Excellence in Urban Transport"

AHMEDABAD, Oct 27: Srinagar city received the "Award of Excellence in Urban Transport" at the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Awards, recognizing it as the "City with the Best Non-Motorized Transport System."

Conferred by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, this award highlights Srinagar Smart City Limited’s (SSCL) success in creating a sustainable, pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly city.

SSCL's initiatives include a 100-km upgrade of key roads with dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths, improved lighting, and public amenities, supporting local tourism and economic growth.

Key roadways like Maulana-Azad Road and Residency Road were upgraded, along with major public spaces such as Srinagar Square (Lal Chowk) and Jhelum Riverfront, which now feature plazas, cafes, and promenades. SSCL also developed a Public Bicycle System with 1,000 bicycles and 200 electric bikes across 180 stations, promoting eco-friendly transport.

These enhancements have made Srinagar more liveable and accessible, with rising foot traffic and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The comprehensive mobility strategy emphasizes walkability, environmental quality, and social cohesion, positioning Srinagar as a model for sustainable urban development and reflecting its commitment to high-quality, people-centric urban transport.

The UMI recognition affirms SSCL’s commitment to developing a future-ready, people-centred urban transport. Strategic investment has improved “Quality of Life” through planning of sustainable urban mobility initiatives.
